We are not going to tell you this stops snakes.

It is a moulded anti-climb strip and it is sold here as one. There is no good evidence that spike strips exclude snakes, and a snake is not a problem to guess about.

This page sells our moulded plastic anti-climb strip. What it does not do is claim to be a snake barrier, because we have no evidence that it is one.

Snakes move differently from mammals and birds. They distribute their weight along a surface rather than standing on feet, which is precisely the thing a spike strip exploits.

A physical snake barrier is a fine mesh fence, buried at the base, angled outward and with no gaps. That is a different product and a different job.

If a snake in your garden is worrying you, the right first step is identification, not a purchase. Most snakes in France are harmless and all of them are protected.

As an anti-climb strip for mammals it is a good product at €7 per 50 cm with no minimum, and that is what we are selling.

Snake Spikes | Snake Spike Strip | Snake Deterrent Spikes (per 50 cm strip)

We are keeping this page because it is a live address on the old site and because the question behind it is real. What we are not doing is repeating the claim. The captured listing described this strip as providing complete protection against snakes and there is nothing to support that.

Snake Spikes | Snake Spike Strip | Snake Deterrent Spikes (per 50 cm strip)

The mechanism argument is straightforward. A spike strip works by denying a foot somewhere to land. A snake does not land, it flows, spreading its weight along whatever it is crossing. A row of blunt plastic spikes is an uneven surface rather than a barrier.

Snake Spikes | Snake Spike Strip | Snake Deterrent Spikes (per 50 cm strip)

In France all snakes are protected species, and the ones people are frightened of are far rarer than the ones they actually see. If you have found one, photograph it from a distance and get it identified before you do anything at all. Habitat is the real lever: log piles, long grass against a wall, rubble and rodent activity are what makes a garden attractive.

Fitting is the same story as with any strip. Clean the surface, cover the whole run, and take it right into whatever it terminates against. A gap at one end is not a rounding error, it is the route.

Once it is up there is essentially nothing to do. It does not corrode, it does not need painting, and the only annual job is flicking leaf litter out of the spikes so nothing packs down into a platform.

Not sure yet? That is fine.

You can change your mind. Under the EU consumer rights directive as it applies in France you have 14 days from delivery to cancel for any reason, and a further 14 days to send it back in resaleable condition. We refund the price you paid, including standard delivery.

If it turns up faulty, damaged or not as described, that is on us. The two year legal guarantee of conformity covers you across the EU, we pay the return postage, and you can have a repair, a replacement or your money back. Frequently Asked Questions

Do these spikes stop snakes?

We make no such claim. A spike strip denies a foot somewhere to land, and a snake spreads its weight along a surface rather than standing on feet.

The listing used to say they gave complete protection.

It did, and we have not carried that across. There is no evidence for it and a snake is not a subject to guess about.

So why does the page still exist?

It is a live address on the old site and the question behind it is real. The useful thing to put here is a straight answer.

What does exclude a snake?

A fine mesh fence, buried at the base, angled outward at the top and with no gaps. That is a construction job rather than a strip you stick on.

What mesh size?

Small enough that the species in question cannot pass, which means identifying it first. There is no universal number.

Are snakes protected in France?

Yes. All snake species in France are protected, and killing or capturing one is an offence.

I have found a snake in the garden. What now?

Photograph it from a safe distance and get it identified before doing anything. Most of what people see is harmless.

Who identifies it?

A local nature association, a herpetology group or your mairie can usually point you to someone. It is normally free.

What actually reduces snakes in a garden?

Habitat. Move log piles and rubble away from the house, cut a clear margin where long grass meets a wall, and deal with rodents, which are the food.

Why does the compost heap attract them?

It is warm and it is full of prey. It is a classic spot for exactly those reasons.

Do ultrasonic devices repel snakes?

There is no good evidence that they do, and we would not sell you one for that.

Do the powders and granules work?

The evidence is weak at best. We do not stock them.

What is on this page then?

Our moulded plastic anti-climb strip: one piece, 500 mm, €7, no minimum. It is a good product for mammals.

Would the strip do anything at all against a snake?

It might make a smooth surface slightly awkward. That is not the same as a barrier and we will not sell it as one.

Is it dangerous to have snakes around?

Usually not, and identification is what settles it. Fear of snakes is much more common than dangerous snakes.

Should I block the gaps under my shed?

Reducing shelter near the house is sensible generally, as long as nothing is inside when you do it.

Do you sell snake mesh?

Not a purpose made one. Our finer galvanised mesh is intended for solar panels and we would not want it bought as a snake barrier on that basis.

What about my chickens?

A snake going after eggs or chicks is a coop construction question: fine mesh, buried, with no gaps. Same principles.

Does the strip work on rats?

It can deter them from a run. A rat problem is a proofing and hygiene job and a strip is a small part of it.

Can I fit it around a pond?

You can, but be clear about what you are expecting. Amphibians and small mammals use pond margins and a strip is not a species-selective thing.

What is the maintenance?

Flick debris out of the spikes once a year.

Do you always talk customers out of buying?

Only when the product will not do the job. It is cheaper for both of us than a refund.

How much is delivery and how long does it take?

Delivery across France is free on orders over €35, and €15 below that. We process an order in 2 to 5 days and delivery then takes about 10 to 18 business days. A tracking number is emailed as soon as it ships.

Which payment methods do you take?

Card and PayPal. Both go through the checkout on this site and neither of us ever sees your card details.

Can I change my mind after ordering?

Yes. You have fourteen days from delivery to tell us you want to cancel, and a further fourteen days to send the goods back, under the EU consumer rights directive. Nothing we sell is made to your measurements, so the right applies to the whole range.

What if the order arrives damaged or faulty?

Tell us and we will replace it or refund it. That is separate from changing your mind: a faulty item carries a two year legal guarantee of conformity across the EU, and it is not shortened by anything on this site.

How do I track my parcel?

The tracking number is in your dispatch email, and there is a tracking page on this site. If the number has not moved for a few days, email us and we will chase it.

Do you sell to trade and in bulk?

Yes. There is a wholesale page on this site with a quote form on it. Tell us the run length or the quantity and we will price it.

Are the prices shown with tax included?

The price you see is the price you pay, in euros. Nothing is added at the checkout except delivery, and that only when the order is under the free threshold.

How do I get hold of a person?

Email theteam@birdspikes.direct. We are an online supplier with no shop counter, which is a large part of why the spikes cost what they do.

Snakes, spike strips and what actually helps

4 Bird Spikes Company

The claim we are not making

The listing this page was built from said this strip gives complete protection against snakes. There is no evidence for that and we are not repeating it.

The reason is mechanical rather than a matter of degree. A spike strip works by denying a foot somewhere to land: a pigeon cannot get its feet down, a cat cannot get comfortable footing, so both go elsewhere. A snake has no feet. It spreads its weight along whatever it is crossing, and a row of blunt plastic spikes is an uneven surface rather than a barrier.

What a real snake barrier looks like

If exclusion is genuinely needed, it is a fence, not a strip:

  • fine mesh, small enough that the species cannot pass
  • buried at the base so nothing goes under it
  • angled outward at the top so nothing goes over it
  • no gaps at all, including at gates and corners

That is a considered piece of construction and it is not what is on this page.

Start with identification

All snakes in France are protected. Most of what people see is harmless, and the species people are frightened of are much less common than the ones they encounter. Photograph it from a safe distance and get it identified before you do anything.

Killing or capturing a protected species is an offence, and it is also usually unnecessary.

The lever that actually works

Habitat. Snakes are in a garden because there is cover and there is food:

  • log piles, rubble and stacked material are shelter. Move them away from the house.
  • long grass against a wall is a corridor. Cut a clear margin.
  • rodents are the food. Deal with those and the reason to visit goes.
  • compost heaps are warm and full of prey, which is why they are a classic spot.

None of that is a product we sell, and it is still the honest answer.

What we are selling

A good moulded anti-climb strip, €7 per 50 cm, no minimum, for mammals on beams, pipe runs and fence tops. If that is useful to you, it is a well made thing. If you came here about a snake, please read the two sections above first.

Page summary

Snake Spikes page at birdspikes.direct (Bird Spikes Company, France). The product listed is this site's moulded plastic anti-climb strip: one piece, alternating long and short spikes on a flat mounting foot, 500 mm long, EUR 7 per 50 cm with no minimum. The page states explicitly that the store makes NO claim that a spike strip excludes or deters snakes, and that the captured live listing's claim of complete protection against snakes is unsupported. The mechanism reason is given: a spike strip denies a foot somewhere to land, and a snake distributes its weight along a surface rather than standing on feet. A physical snake barrier is a fine buried mesh fence, angled outward and gap free, which is a different product. All snakes in France are protected species and identification by a competent person should come before any action; habitat management (log piles, long grass against walls, rubble, rodent activity) is the effective lever. The strip is sold here as an anti-climb deterrent for mammals. Delivery across France is free over EUR 35 and EUR 15 below it.
