This range was written for our Australian and New Zealand stores. Here the same strip is bought for climbing mammals generally, and the advice is the same.
Possums are an Australasian animal and they are not found in France. This page exists because our sibling stores in that part of the world sell this range under that name.
The strip itself is the same stainless product we sell everywhere else, and it is bought here for climbing mammals in general: martens, squirrels, cats and rodents on a run.
It works the same way for all of them. It denies footing along a route rather than repelling anything.

It is worth saying plainly why the page is here rather than quietly rewriting it. Rule one of a conversion like this is that nothing the old site published gets dropped without somebody deciding to, so the URL and the search intent stay. What people in France actually ask us about, on this product, is the stone marten. A marten is an agile climber that uses ledges, beams, pipe runs and cable trays to get into roof spaces and outbuildings, and a continuous spiked run along the approach is a reasonable part of an answer.
It is only part of one. Martens are strong and inventive, they are protected in some circumstances, and the durable fix is closing the entry point rather than making the approach unpleasant. Treat the strip as one layer.
Fitting is the part that decides whether it works. Clean the surface first, because old droppings and moss stop adhesive keying to anything, and a strip that lifts at one end is a perch rather than a deterrent.
Cover the whole surface, not most of it. Birds are entirely willing to use the bare half metre at the end of a run, and a gap teaches them exactly where to stand. Round the number of strips up, never down.

Will it stop a stone marten?
It is one useful layer on the approach. It will not, by itself, deal with an animal that is already living in your roof.
What actually ends a marten problem?
Finding and closing the entry point, once the space is empty. Everything else buys time.
Can I just block the hole?
Only after you are certain nothing is inside, and be careful in spring when young may be present.
Are martens protected?
Protection varies by species and circumstance, and the rules are not the same everywhere. It is worth a call to check before you act.

Does partial coverage work?

Will it injure the animal?

What about martens in a car engine bay?
That is a parking problem more than a spike problem. Park elsewhere if you can, and look at the physical barriers made for that specific job.
Is stainless important here?
It means the strip lasts outdoors for years without rusting, including on a north facing wall that never really dries.

Will it stop cats too?
Often. Most people buy our moulded plastic strip for cats because it is blunter and more visible, which matters on a boundary fence.
Does it work on a round pipe?
It can be cable tied to one, though the curve limits how well the base sits. On a smooth vertical pipe a physical collar works better.
Is there a plastic version?
Yes, a single moulded strip at €7 per 50 cm. It is more visible and there is nothing to assemble.
Do I need to clean the surface first?
If you are gluing, always. Adhesive does not key to dirt.
Can I paint the base?
You can, though the clear base is already close to invisible at a few metres and paint on the pins is a bad idea.
What is the maintenance?
Clear leaf litter and cobwebs out once a year, so nothing packs down into a walkway.
If I do not have possums, should I buy this page's product at all?

it into whatever it terminates against. A gap is a step, and these animals are far more
capable than a bird of taking a step.
