About this product
The plastic one, and when to choose it.
A single moulded strip with nothing to assemble. It costs a little more than the steel and it is more visible, and there are jobs where both of those are the point.
This is our moulded plastic strip, and it is the same physical product behind the cat, snake and moulded possum pages on this site.
It is one piece, so there is nothing to assemble and nothing that can work loose, which matters on a long fence run more than it does on a single ledge.
It is blunter and far more visible than the steel strip. Sometimes that is a drawback and sometimes, on a shared boundary where you want people to see it, it is the reason to choose it.
€7 per 50 cm with no minimum, against €5 for the stainless. You are paying for convenience and visibility, not for performance.
There is no metal in it at all, so it cannot rust and it cannot stain a timber fence or a rendered wall.
Choosing between this and the stainless strip is genuinely a preference rather than a quality question, and it is worth setting out honestly. The steel is cheaper, thinner, nearly invisible and better on anything decorative or high up. The plastic is a single moulded piece, quicker to fit in quantity, obviously present, and the one to pick where you want the deterrent to be seen.
The other real difference is assembly. The stainless strip comes with the pins to fit into the base, which takes a couple of minutes per strip. On four strips that is nothing. On sixty strips of boundary fence it is an afternoon, and this is the strip people buy for that job.

What is the difference between this and the stainless strip?
Price, visibility and assembly. The plastic is one piece with nothing to fit together, it is more obviously there, and it is €7 against €5. They deter equally well.
Which should I buy?
Plastic for long fence runs and where you want it seen. Stainless for ledges, sills and anything on the front of a building where you want it invisible.

Does it go brittle in the sun?
It is made for outdoor use. Any plastic left outdoors for many years will age, and this is one reason people choose stainless on a high, hard-to-reach position.
Is it more effective than the steel?
No. They deter the same things. Everything else is a preference.
Why is the plastic more expensive if it is not better?
Because it is one moulded piece rather than a base plus wire, and you are paying for the convenience and the visibility.
Will it stop birds?
Yes, on the surfaces it is fitted to, the same as the steel.
Will it stop cats?

Will it stop people climbing?
We make no claim about people. It is an animal deterrent for a domestic boundary.
The old listing said it was effective against humans.
It did, and we have not repeated that. Presenting a blunt animal deterrent as a security device invites somebody to rely on it.
Does it need painting?
No, and painting the spikes would be a poor idea.
How many strips for a 12 metre fence?
Twenty-four. Twenty-five if the ends are awkward.
Do I need to do the whole fence?
Yes. A partial run is a detour, not a barrier.
What is the maintenance?

We sell two spike strips and they do the same job. Here is the difference, without the
marketing.
Stainless steel, €5 per 50 cm
Thinner, cheaper, and close to invisible at a few metres because the base is clear and the
pins are 1.3 mm wire. Better on anything decorative, anything high up, and anything where
you would rather nobody noticed. Pins fit into the base, which takes a minute or two per
strip.
Moulded plastic, €7 per 50 cm
One piece, nothing to assemble, quicker to fit in quantity. Blunter, chunkier, and
obviously there. No metal at all, so nothing can rust or stain. The one to pick for a long
boundary run, or where you actively want the deterrent to be visible.
When the plastic is the right call

Screws, nails, double sided tape, exterior adhesive or cable ties, depending on what you
are fixing to. Clean the surface first if you are gluing.
Cover the whole run and take it into the post or the return at each end. That is the same
