The cheapest gutter you will ever unblock.
Birds on a gutter line are a drainage problem before they are a mess problem. A spiked gutter edge stops the nesting material getting in there at all.
A gutter run is one of the best surfaces on a building for a bird: a long, level, sheltered edge with a view.
The cost of that is not really the mess below. It is the nesting material that ends up in the gutter, the outlet that blocks, and the water that then goes down the wall.
A spiked gutter edge takes the perch away, and with it the material that would have been dropped there.
Sold per 50 cm strip with no minimum, so a single elevation costs what that elevation measures rather than what a pack contains.
Cable ties through the base holes are the usual fixing here, which means nothing gets drilled into the gutter itself.
The argument for doing this is arithmetic rather than aesthetics. Clearing a blocked gutter costs a visit, and a blocked gutter that has been overflowing for a season costs rather more than that in pointing, render and damp.
Fit the strip to the OUTER edge of the gutter, standing proud, rather than inside the channel. Inside the channel it catches leaves and becomes the blockage you were trying to avoid, which is the single most common way this gets done wrong.
If the birds are getting under the tiles above the gutter rather than sitting on it, the strip is not the answer. That is a comb filler or a mesh job at the eaves.
Fitting is the part that decides whether it works. Clean the surface first, because old droppings and moss stop adhesive keying to anything, and a strip that lifts at one end is a perch rather than a deterrent.
Cover the whole surface, not most of it. Birds are entirely willing to use the bare half metre at the end of a run, and a gap teaches them exactly where to stand. Round the number of strips up, never down.
Once it is on, there is nothing to do but clear leaves and nesting material out from between the pins once or twice a year. Enough debris packs down into a platform, and then a bird can stand on that instead of on the spikes.

Can I fit them inside the gutter channel?
Please do not. Inside the channel they catch every leaf that comes down the roof and become the blockage you were trying to prevent. This is the most common mistake.
What is the real cost of birds on a gutter?
The nesting material that ends up in the channel. A blocked outlet sends water down the wall, and that costs far more than cleaning the path.
How do I fix them without drilling the gutter?
Cable ties through the base holes. That is the standard fixing here and it is why gutters are one of the easier jobs on this site.
My gutter has a rolled front edge and a tie will not sit.

Should I clear the gutter first?
Yes. Spiking a blocked gutter fixes nothing and you would have to remove the strip again to clean it.
How many strips for a 10 metre run?
Twenty. Take it end to end, because a gap is where they will sit.
Will it stop birds getting under my roof tiles?
No. That is a different job: an eaves comb filler or mesh across the tile gap.
Does it work on plastic guttering?
Yes. Cable ties are ideal on plastic because nothing is drilled or glued.
And on cast iron?
Yes. Cable ties or exterior silicone, depending on the profile.
Will the spikes rust into the gutter?
No. They are stainless, which is exactly why they are the right product for something permanently wet.
Are they visible from the ground?
The base is clear and 5 mm high and the wire is thin. On a gutter line at roof height they are effectively invisible.
Will they hold leaves themselves?
Some litter collects between the pins over a year. Clear it when you clear the gutter.
Do I need to do the whole roof?
Do whole runs. A two metre gap in a ten metre run collects as much material as the whole run would have.
Can I fit them at the same time as gutter guard mesh?
Yes, and they solve different halves of the problem. The mesh keeps leaves out; the spikes stop the birds putting material in.
Will they hurt the birds?
No. Blunt-ended wire that removes the footing.
Is there a nesting season issue?
Yes. If there is an active nest in or above the gutter, wait until the young have fledged. An active nest is protected.
What about a valley gutter?
The same principle applies to the edges, but a valley is a specialist job and it is worth having a roofer look.
Can I cut the strip to fit between brackets?
Yes, with tin snips, between the pin mounts.
Does snow damage them?
No. Snow can bridge the pins briefly and clears as it melts.
How long will they last up there?
Years. Stainless pins and a UV stabilised base are the right materials for a wet, exposed position.
Is this the same strip as your main bird spikes?
Yes. Same product, and the difference is the advice: on a gutter the reason for doing it is drainage rather than mess.

Why a gutter is worth doing
A gutter run is close to ideal for a bird. It is long, level, sheltered by the roof edge,
and it looks out over everything. So they use it, and while they are using it they drop
nesting material into the channel.
That is the actual cost. Not the marks on the path, but the blocked outlet, the water going
over the front edge every time it rains hard, and the damp patch that eventually appears
inside.
The one thing people get wrong
Fit the strip along the outer edge, standing proud of the gutter, so a bird cannot
settle on the lip.
Do not fit it inside the channel. Inside the channel it catches every leaf that comes
down the roof and turns into the blockage you bought it to prevent. This is by far the most
common mistake and it converts a good product into a bad one.

nothing, and nothing is drilled into the gutter, which matters if it is plastic and matters
more if it is old.
