Looking after it

Clear leaves and nesting material from between the pins once or twice a year. Enough debris packs down into a platform and a bird will stand on that instead.

Stainless Steel Pins1.3 mm pins that do not rust, inland or on the coast
Sold By The 50 cmNo minimum order, so you buy the run you actually have
Almost InvisibleA clear 5 mm base that reads as nothing from the ground
Humane And PermanentIt removes the perch. It does not injure anything

A boundary is only as good as its worst metre.

Fence tops are a route rather than a perch, so this is a continuity job. Cover the whole run or expect them to use the bit you left.

Fence tops, gate rails and wall copings are highways. Birds use them as a perch and cats, squirrels and martens use them as a route.

Both cases want the same thing: continuous coverage along the whole run, taken right into the post or the return at each end.

Stainless pins on a clear base, sold per 50 cm with no minimum, so a boundary costs what the boundary measures.

Cable ties on wire and metal, screws or exterior adhesive on a timber capping rail. Nothing complicated and nothing to assemble.

This is an animal deterrent for a domestic boundary. We make no claim about people and we would not sell it as a security product.

Fence Spikes | Pest Spike Strips For Fences | Fence Repellant Spikes (per 50 cm strip)

The captured copy on the old listing described this class of strip as effective against humans. We have not carried that across. A blunt animal deterrent is not a security device, presenting it as one invites somebody to rely on it, and anti-personnel fixings on a domestic boundary raise questions about liability that a spike strip has no business raising.

Fence Spikes | Pest Spike Strips For Fences | Fence Repellant Spikes (per 50 cm strip)

For what it is actually for, it is a good product and a cheap one. The failure mode is almost always the same: somebody covers the section they can reach comfortably and leaves the last metre by the gate post.

Fence Spikes | Pest Spike Strips For Fences | Fence Repellant Spikes (per 50 cm strip)

Where the neighbour's shed roof, a wheelie bin or an overhanging branch gives a way onto the fence past your strip, deal with that first. Every boundary has one weak point and it is rarely the middle.

Fitting is the part that decides whether it works. Clean the surface first, because old droppings and moss stop adhesive keying to anything, and a strip that lifts at one end is a perch rather than a deterrent.

Cover the whole surface, not most of it. Birds are entirely willing to use the bare half metre at the end of a run, and a gap teaches them exactly where to stand. Round the number of strips up, never down.

Once it is on, there is nothing to do but clear leaves and nesting material out from between the pins once or twice a year. Enough debris packs down into a platform, and then a bird can stand on that instead of on the spikes.

Not sure yet? That is fine.

You can change your mind. Under the EU consumer rights directive as it applies in France you have 14 days from delivery to cancel for any reason, and a further 14 days to send it back in resaleable condition. We refund the price you paid, including standard delivery.

If it turns up faulty, damaged or not as described, that is on us. The two year legal guarantee of conformity covers you across the EU, we pay the return postage, and you can have a repair, a replacement or your money back. Read the full detail on our refunds and returns page, or ask us anything before you order.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to do the whole fence?

Effectively yes. A fence top is a route, and a strip that covers most of it is a strip they walk around.

What is the most common mistake?

Leaving the last 40 cm by the gate post because it is awkward. That is exactly where they will cross.

What defeats a spiked fence?

A shed roof, a wheelie bin, a stack of pallets or an overhanging branch giving access past your strip. Deal with those first.

Will it stop people climbing the fence?

We make no such claim and we do not sell it as a security product. It is a blunt animal deterrent for a domestic boundary.

The old listing said it was effective against humans.

It did, and we have not carried that across. Presenting an animal deterrent as a security device invites somebody to rely on it.

How do I fix it to a wire fence?

Cable ties through the base holes. It is the fastest fixing on this site.

And to a timber capping rail?

Short exterior screws, or exterior silicone if you would rather not make holes.

What about a rendered wall coping?

Exterior silicone, on a surface cleaned back to sound material. Not over loose paint.

How many strips for a 15 metre boundary?

Thirty. Buy thirty-one if the ends are fiddly.

Will it stop cats?

Often. Most people buy our moulded plastic strip for cats because it is blunter and more visible, which is worth something on a shared boundary.

Will it stop birds perching?

Yes, that is what it is designed for. On a fence rail it works exactly as it does on a ledge.

Is it safe for wildlife?

The pins are blunt-ended wire. They deny footing rather than injure, and animals step around them.

Does the neighbour need to agree?

If the fence is shared, it is worth asking. It is their boundary too and a visible strip on top of it is the sort of thing that starts arguments.

How visible is it?

The base is clear and the wire is thin, so at a few metres it disappears. The plastic version is much more obvious.

Can I paint it?

The base, if you must. Not the pins.

Will it rust and stain the fence?

No. Stainless pins, which matters on a timber fence where a rust streak would be permanent.

What about a gate that opens?

Fit the strip to the gate top as well and take it to both edges, or the gate becomes the low point in the run.

Can I cut it to length?

Yes, with tin snips, between the pin mounts.

Does it work in winter?

Yes. Snow can bridge the pins briefly and clears as it melts.

How long does it last outdoors?

Years. Stainless pins on a UV stabilised base.

What maintenance is there?

Clear leaf litter out once a year. On a garden fence a packed strip becomes a walkway.

Is this the same product as your main bird spikes?

Yes. Same strip, and on a fence the reason for buying it is usually a route rather than a perch.

How much is delivery and how long does it take?

Delivery across France is free on orders over €35, and €15 below that. We process an order in 2 to 5 days and delivery then takes about 10 to 18 business days. A tracking number is emailed as soon as it ships.

Which payment methods do you take?

Card and PayPal. Both go through the checkout on this site and neither of us ever sees your card details.

Can I change my mind after ordering?

Yes. You have fourteen days from delivery to tell us you want to cancel, and a further fourteen days to send the goods back, under the EU consumer rights directive. Nothing we sell is made to your measurements, so the right applies to the whole range.

What if the order arrives damaged or faulty?

Tell us and we will replace it or refund it. That is separate from changing your mind: a faulty item carries a two year legal guarantee of conformity across the EU, and it is not shortened by anything on this site.

How do I track my parcel?

The tracking number is in your dispatch email, and there is a tracking page on this site. If the number has not moved for a few days, email us and we will chase it.

Do you sell to trade and in bulk?

Yes. There is a wholesale page on this site with a quote form on it. Tell us the run length or the quantity and we will price it.

Are the prices shown with tax included?

The price you see is the price you pay, in euros. Nothing is added at the checkout except delivery, and that only when the order is under the free threshold.

How do I get hold of a person?

Email theteam@birdspikes.direct. We are an online supplier with no shop counter, which is a large part of why the spikes cost what they do.

Doing a boundary properly

4 Bird Spikes Company

Continuity is the whole job

A fence top is not a perch, it is a route. Birds sit on it, and cats, squirrels and martens walk along it. Either way, a strip that covers most of the run is a strip they walk around.

Cover the whole thing, post to post, and take it right into whatever it ends against. The bare 40 cm by the gate post is not a rounding error, it is the answer to the question you just asked the animal.

Find the weak point first

Every boundary has one and it is rarely the middle:

  • a shed or garage roof that gives access halfway along
  • a wheelie bin or a stack of pallets parked against the fence
  • an overhanging branch within a couple of metres
  • a low gate next to a high fence

Deal with those before you buy anything, because none of them is a spike problem and all of them defeat a spiked run.

Fixing to the different tops

  • Wire and metal: cable ties through the base holes. Fast, cheap, reversible.
  • Timber capping rail: short exterior screws through the base, or exterior silicone.
  • Wall coping: exterior silicone, on a surface cleaned back to sound material.

Butt the strips end to end with no gaps. Cut with tin snips between the pin mounts where a run does not divide neatly.

What we do not claim

The old listing for the plastic version of this strip said it was effective against humans. We do not repeat that. This is a blunt animal deterrent for a domestic boundary. It is not a security product, we do not sell it as one, and anything fitted to a boundary with people in mind is a different conversation with different rules.

Living with it

Clear leaf litter out once a year. On a garden fence that matters more than it does on a parapet, because a packed strip becomes a walkway rather than just a perch.

Page summary

Fence Spikes sold by Bird Spikes Company at birdspikes.direct, in France. The same stainless steel strip as the rest of this site's spike range: 1.3 mm pins 115 mm long on a clear polycarbonate base 500 mm x 23 mm x 5 mm, 70 mm protected band, EUR 5 per 50 cm strip with no minimum. Fitted along fence tops, gate rails and wall copings, where birds perch and cats, squirrels and martens travel. Coverage must be CONTINUOUS across the whole run and taken into the post or return at each end, because partial coverage is simply walked around, and adjacent structures such as a shed roof, a bin or an overhanging branch must be addressed first. Fixed with cable ties on wire and metal, or screws or exterior adhesive on a timber capping rail. This is an ANIMAL deterrent for a domestic boundary: the site makes no claim that it deters people and does not sell it as a security product. It does not injure animals. Delivery across France is free over EUR 35 and EUR 15 below it.
