Looking after it

Flick leaf litter out of the spikes once a year. There is nothing to corrode and nothing to maintain beyond that.

One Moulded PieceNothing to assemble and nothing that can work loose
Sold By The 50 cmNo minimum order, so you buy the run you actually have
Blunt By DesignLong and short spikes that deny footing without a sharp point
It Will Not RustNo metal in it at all, so nothing can stain a fence or a wall

Blunt on purpose.

A cat deterrent has to be uncomfortable and completely incapable of injuring. That is why the moulded strip is the one people buy for this rather than the steel.

Cats walk fence tops and wall copings as routes. They are agile, they are patient, and they will find the one metre you did not cover.

The moulded plastic strip is the one to use here. It is blunt by design, obviously visible, and it has no wire in it that could catch a paw.

That visibility is a feature on a cat job. A cat that can see the surface is awkward simply chooses another route, which is exactly the outcome you want.

€7 per 50 cm with no minimum, so a boundary costs what the boundary measures.

Cable ties on wire and metal, screws or exterior adhesive on a timber capping rail.

Cat Spikes | Cat Spikes For Fence | Cat Deterrent Spike Strips (per 50 cm strip)

There is a legal and a neighbourly dimension here that is worth stating. Deliberately injuring a cat is an offence, and a deterrent that could do so is not something we would sell for this purpose. This strip cannot: the spikes are blunt moulded plastic and they deny comfortable footing rather than presenting a point.

Cat Spikes | Cat Spikes For Fence | Cat Deterrent Spike Strips (per 50 cm strip)

The practical dimension is coverage. Cats are far better at this than birds are. A gap at the gate post, a bin against the fence, a shed roof halfway along, an overhanging branch: any one of them and the strip becomes decorative. Walk the boundary and look for the way in before you measure anything.

Cat Spikes | Cat Spikes For Fence | Cat Deterrent Spike Strips (per 50 cm strip)

It is also worth talking to the neighbour if the fence is shared. A visible strip along the top of a boundary is exactly the sort of thing that starts a dispute, and it is a much easier conversation before it goes up than after.

Cat Spikes | Cat Spikes For Fence | Cat Deterrent Spike Strips (per 50 cm strip)

Fitting is the same story as with any strip. Clean the surface, cover the whole run, and take it right into whatever it terminates against. A gap at one end is not a rounding error, it is the route.

Cat Spikes | Cat Spikes For Fence | Cat Deterrent Spike Strips (per 50 cm strip)

Once it is up there is essentially nothing to do. It does not corrode, it does not need painting, and the only annual job is flicking leaf litter out of the spikes so nothing packs down into a platform.

Not sure yet? That is fine.

You can change your mind. Under the EU consumer rights directive as it applies in France you have 14 days from delivery to cancel for any reason, and a further 14 days to send it back in resaleable condition. We refund the price you paid, including standard delivery.

If it turns up faulty, damaged or not as described, that is on us. The two year legal guarantee of conformity covers you across the EU, we pay the return postage, and you can have a repair, a replacement or your money back. Frequently Asked Questions

Will these injure a cat?

No. The spikes are blunt moulded plastic and there is no wire in the strip at all. They deny comfortable footing, nothing more.

Why not the stainless strip for cats?

The plastic is blunter, more visible and has no wire that could catch a paw. For a cat job it is the right one, even though it costs €2 more per strip.

Is it legal to deter a cat from my fence?

Deterring an animal from a surface is a different thing from harming one. Deliberately injuring a cat is an offence, which is exactly why this product is blunt.

How much of the fence do I need to cover?

All of it, post to post, taken into the post at each end. Cats are much better at finding the gap than birds are.

What usually defeats it?

A bin against the fence, a shed roof partway along, an overhanging branch, or a low gate next to a high fence. Walk the boundary before you measure.

Should I tell my neighbour?

If the fence is shared, yes, and before you fit it. A visible strip along a boundary is the sort of thing that starts a dispute.

Will the cat just find another way in?

Possibly. This makes one surface unattractive. It is not a garden repellent and nothing on this site is.

Is it visible?

Yes, deliberately. A cat that can see the fence top is awkward chooses another route, which is the outcome you want.

How do I fit it to a wire fence?

Cable ties through the base. Quick, cheap and reversible.

And to a timber capping rail?

Short exterior screws through the base, or exterior adhesive if you would rather not make holes.

What about a wall coping?

Exterior adhesive on a surface cleaned back to sound material.

How many strips for a 20 metre boundary?

Forty. Buy forty-one if the ends are fiddly.

Can I cut a strip?

Yes, between the segments, with a knife or snips.

Will it stop cats spraying on the fence?

It stops them getting up on it. Spraying at ground level is a different problem and this is not the answer to it.

Does it work on a gate?

Yes, and do the gate as well as the fence, because a lower gate becomes the route.

Will it stop other animals?

Squirrels and martens use the same routes, and it is a reasonable deterrent for both. There are pages on this site for each.

Will it hurt a bird that lands on it?

No. It is blunt. Birds simply do not settle on it.

Does it fade?

Any plastic outdoors will weather over years. It does not affect how it works.

Can I paint it to match the fence?

You can paint the mounting foot. Painting the spikes is a poor idea and it makes them harder to see, which is half the point.

Is there a metal version?

Yes, our stainless strip at €5. For cats we would still recommend this one.

What is the maintenance?

Flick leaf litter out of the spikes once a year.

My cat uses the fence. Will this hurt her?

No. She will find it uncomfortable and go another way, which is exactly what it is designed to do.

How much is delivery and how long does it take?

Delivery across France is free on orders over €35, and €15 below that. We process an order in 2 to 5 days and delivery then takes about 10 to 18 business days. A tracking number is emailed as soon as it ships.

Which payment methods do you take?

Card and PayPal. Both go through the checkout on this site and neither of us ever sees your card details.

Can I change my mind after ordering?

Yes. You have fourteen days from delivery to tell us you want to cancel, and a further fourteen days to send the goods back, under the EU consumer rights directive. Nothing we sell is made to your measurements, so the right applies to the whole range.

What if the order arrives damaged or faulty?

Tell us and we will replace it or refund it. That is separate from changing your mind: a faulty item carries a two year legal guarantee of conformity across the EU, and it is not shortened by anything on this site.

How do I track my parcel?

The tracking number is in your dispatch email, and there is a tracking page on this site. If the number has not moved for a few days, email us and we will chase it.

Do you sell to trade and in bulk?

Yes. There is a wholesale page on this site with a quote form on it. Tell us the run length or the quantity and we will price it.

Are the prices shown with tax included?

The price you see is the price you pay, in euros. Nothing is added at the checkout except delivery, and that only when the order is under the free threshold.

How do I get hold of a person?

Email theteam@birdspikes.direct. We are an online supplier with no shop counter, which is a large part of why the spikes cost what they do.

Keeping cats off a fence line, humanely

4 Bird Spikes Company

Why the blunt one

We sell a stainless strip and a moulded plastic strip. For cats, buy the plastic.

It is blunt by design, there is no wire in it that a paw could catch, and it is obviously visible. That last point does more work than people expect. A cat that can see the fence top is awkward simply goes somewhere else, which is the whole objective. You are not trying to surprise anything.

It also cannot injure a cat, and that matters legally as much as ethically: deliberately injuring a cat is an offence, and we would not sell a product for this job that could.

Cats are better at this than birds

Walk the boundary before you measure. Cats will use:

  • the gate post and the low gate next to the high fence
  • a wheelie bin, a compost bin or a stack of pallets against the panel
  • a shed or garage roof partway along
  • an overhanging branch within a couple of metres
  • the neighbour's side, which you may not be able to do anything about

Any one of those and a spiked run is decorative. Deal with them first.

Covering the run

Post to post, taken right into the post at each end. Butt the strips with no gaps. If the gate is lower than the fence, do the gate too or the gate is now the route.

Cable ties through the base on wire and metal, short exterior screws or adhesive on a timber capping rail.

The neighbour conversation

If the fence is shared, have it before you fit anything. A visible strip along the top of a boundary is the sort of thing that turns into a dispute, and it is a much better conversation in advance. Most people are reasonable about a humane deterrent when they are asked rather than presented with it.

What this does not do

It does not stop a cat coming into your garden by another route, and it does not repel anything. It makes one specific surface unattractive to walk along. If the cat is coming under the gate, this is not the product.

Page summary

Cat Spikes sold by Bird Spikes Company at birdspikes.direct, in France. A single piece moulded plastic strip with blunt alternating long and short spikes on a flat mounting foot, 500 mm long, EUR 7 per 50 cm strip with no minimum. Fitted continuously along fence tops, gate rails and wall copings, where cats travel as a route rather than perch. The moulded plastic version is preferred over this site's stainless strip for cats because it is blunt, contains no wire that could catch a paw, and is visibly present, so a cat chooses another route rather than testing it. It CANNOT injure a cat, which matters because deliberately injuring one is an offence. Coverage must be continuous and taken into the post at each end, and adjacent access such as a shed roof, a bin or an overhanging branch must be dealt with first or the strip is decorative. Where the fence is shared, discussing it with the neighbour first is advised. Fixed with cable ties on wire and metal, or screws or exterior adhesive on a timber capping rail. Delivery across France is free over EUR 35 and EUR 15 below it.
