Looking after it

Inspect the beads once a year. Dust and grit gradually take the tack out of any gel, and a bead that has crusted over has stopped working. Run a fresh bead over the old one rather than scraping it off.

Fits Where Spikes CannotNarrow sills, round pipes, beams and carved stone
A Standard Caulking GunNo special applicator and no fixings at all
Non Toxic, Non LethalIt puts birds off a surface. It does not trap them
Nothing To DrillThe option on a listed or decorative frontage

For the ledge a spike will not sit on.

A clear, non toxic bead run with an ordinary caulking gun. Nothing to drill, which on a listed frontage is often the whole point.

Some surfaces will not take a spike strip: a sill too narrow for the base, a round pipe, a carved stone nobody will let you drill.

Gel is the answer on those. A bead run along the surface with an ordinary caulking gun, and birds stop settling because it is unpleasant underfoot.

The formula is clear, non toxic and petroleum based, and it works indoors and out in any weather.

Two pack sizes: 3 tubes covering about 10 linear metres at €65, or 12 tubes covering about 40 metres at €179.

It is a deterrent, not a trap. Nothing adheres a bird to the surface, and that is a property of the product rather than a hope.

Bird Proof Gel | Bird Repellent Gel | Bird Deterrent Application, 3 Pack (10 linear metres)

The case for gel is that it needs no fixings at all. Nothing to screw, nothing to glue a bracket to, and nothing that changes the profile of the surface. On a listed frontage or a carved sill, that is often the only thing anyone will approve.

Bird Proof Gel | Bird Repellent Gel | Bird Deterrent Application, 3 Pack (10 linear metres)

Run it as a continuous bead rather than as dots. Birds use a gap in a bead the same way they use the bare half metre at the end of a spike run, and a broken line simply shows them where to stand.

Surface preparation matters as much as it does with adhesive. Old droppings and moss stop the gel keying to anything, so scrape, wash and let it dry properly first.

Be deliberate about where it goes. It is sticky by design, which is the entire mechanism, so it does not belong anywhere people put their hands. Ledges above head height are its natural home, and handrails and door furniture are not.

It is not permanent the way a steel strip is. Dust and grit take the tack out of any gel, so plan on inspecting it once a year and running a fresh bead over the old one. Where you want something to fit and forget for years, spikes are the better buy and we will say so.

Not sure yet? That is fine.

You can change your mind. Under the EU consumer rights directive as it applies in France you have 14 days from delivery to cancel for any reason, and a further 14 days to send it back in resaleable condition. We refund the price you paid, including standard delivery.

If it turns up faulty, damaged or not as described, that is on us. The two year legal guarantee of conformity covers you across the EU, we pay the return postage, and you can have a repair, a replacement or your money back. Read the full detail on our refunds and returns page, or ask us anything before you order.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does bird gel work?

It is a sticky, clear bead you run along a surface. Birds find it unpleasant to stand on and stop using the ledge. It is a deterrent, not a trap.

Does it stick the bird to the surface?

No. It is tacky enough to be unpleasant underfoot and nothing more. A bird that lands simply leaves.

Is it toxic?

No. It is a non toxic petroleum based formula and it deters by feel rather than by poisoning anything.

When should I use gel instead of spikes?

Where a spike base will not sit or cannot be fixed: a narrow sill, a round pipe, a beam, or stone you may not drill.

How do I apply it?

With an ordinary caulking gun, as a continuous bead. No special applicator and no fixings.

Dots or a line?

A continuous line. Birds use a gap the same way they use a bare end of a spike run, and a broken line just shows them where to stand.

How much does each pack cover?

The 3 pack covers about 10 linear metres and the 12 pack about 40.

Which pack should I buy?

Measure the run first and buy the pack that covers it in one go. A bead joined months later never performs as well.

Do I need to prepare the surface?

Yes. Scrape off droppings and moss, wash it, let it dry. Gel will not key to a dirty surface.

Can I use it indoors?

Yes. It works indoors and out, in any weather.

How long does it last?

About a year, and less in prolonged heat. Dust and grit take the tack out of any gel.

How do I refresh it?

Run a fresh bead over the old one. Do not try to scrape the old one off.

Where should I never use it?

Anywhere people touch: handrails, door furniture, window catches, gate latches, a wall top people lean on.

Is it visible from the ground?

It is clear and low profile, so on a ledge above head height it is close to invisible.

Will it stain the stone?

It is a petroleum based product on a porous surface, so test a small area on anything decorative or historic before you run a full bead.

Will it stop pigeons?

On the surface you apply it to, yes. That is what it is for.

Will it stop gulls?

On a narrow ledge it can. A gull on a broad flat roof is a spike or a netting job.

Does the weather affect it?

It stays workable in any weather. Very hot spells shorten its service life.

Can I use it on a solar panel frame?

We would not. The gap under an array wants closing with mesh rather than making one edge unpleasant.

Is it better than spikes?

No, and we will not pretend otherwise. Spikes are permanent and gel is not. Gel is what you use where spikes cannot go.

Is it safe for other wildlife?

It is non toxic and it does not trap. Keep it off surfaces small mammals routinely use, as you would with any sticky product.

Is this fulfilled from your warehouse?

No, this is one of our dropship lines. The delivery terms on this site still apply.

How much is delivery and how long does it take?

Delivery across France is free on orders over €35, and €15 below that. We process an order in 2 to 5 days and delivery then takes about 10 to 18 business days. A tracking number is emailed as soon as it ships.

Which payment methods do you take?

Card and PayPal. Both go through the checkout on this site and neither of us ever sees your card details.

Can I change my mind after ordering?

Yes. You have fourteen days from delivery to tell us you want to cancel, and a further fourteen days to send the goods back, under the EU consumer rights directive. Nothing we sell is made to your measurements, so the right applies to the whole range.

What if the order arrives damaged or faulty?

Tell us and we will replace it or refund it. That is separate from changing your mind: a faulty item carries a two year legal guarantee of conformity across the EU, and it is not shortened by anything on this site.

How do I track my parcel?

The tracking number is in your dispatch email, and there is a tracking page on this site. If the number has not moved for a few days, email us and we will chase it.

Do you sell to trade and in bulk?

Yes. There is a wholesale page on this site with a quote form on it. Tell us the run length or the quantity and we will price it.

Are the prices shown with tax included?

The price you see is the price you pay, in euros. Nothing is added at the checkout except delivery, and that only when the order is under the free threshold.

How do I get hold of a person?

Email theteam@birdspikes.direct. We are an online supplier with no shop counter, which is a large part of why the spikes cost what they do.

Where gel beats a spike strip

4 Bird Spikes Company

When gel beats spikes

Not often, but clearly when it does. A spike strip needs a flat surface wide enough to take a 23 mm base and something to fix it to. Gel needs neither.

So it is the answer on:

  • a sill too narrow for a strip base
  • a round pipe, a rail or a cable run
  • carved or listed stone where nothing may be drilled or glued
  • a sign face or a beam where a strip would look worse than the birds

Run a line, not dots

This is the one instruction that decides whether it works. A continuous bead, straight or gently wavy along the surface. Not a series of blobs.

Birds treat a gap in the bead exactly as they treat the bare half metre at the end of a spike run. A broken line does not deter them, it tells them where to stand.

Prepare the surface

Scrape off old droppings and moss, wash it, let it dry. Gel will not key to a dirty surface any better than adhesive will, and a bead that lifts is worse than no bead.

Where it must not go

Anywhere people touch. Handrails, door furniture, window catches, gate latches, the top of a wall people lean on. It is sticky by design and that is the entire mechanism, so it belongs above head height on surfaces nobody puts a hand on.

What it is not

It is not a trap. Nothing adheres a bird to the surface: it is tacky enough to be unpleasant to stand on and no more. A bird that lands simply leaves.

It is also not permanent. Dust and grit take the tack out of any gel, so inspect it once a year and run a fresh bead over the old one rather than trying to scrape it off. If you want something to fit and forget for a decade, buy the stainless strip instead. We would rather tell you that here than have you find out in eighteen months.

Coverage

The 3 pack covers about 10 linear metres. The 12 pack covers about 40. Measure the run first and buy the pack that covers it in one go, because a joined bead applied months apart never looks or performs as well.

Page summary

Bird Proof Gel sold by Bird Spikes Company at birdspikes.direct, in France. A clear, non toxic, petroleum based repellent gel applied with a standard caulking gun as a CONTINUOUS bead, straight or wavy, never as dots. It deters birds by making a surface unpleasant underfoot and is the product for places a spike strip cannot be fitted: narrow window sills, round pipes, beams, rafters, signs and decorative or listed stone where nothing may be drilled or glued. Sold in two pack sizes, which are MULTI-BUYS of one warehouse line rather than different goods: a 3 pack covering about 10 linear metres at EUR 65 (was EUR 75) and a 12 pack covering about 40 linear metres at EUR 179 (was EUR 199). Suitable indoors and outdoors in any weather; service life about a year, less in prolonged heat. It is a DETERRENT and not a trap: nothing adheres a bird to the surface. It must NOT be used on handrails, door furniture or anything people touch. The surface must be cleaned of droppings and moss first. It is not fit-and-forget: inspect yearly and run a fresh bead over the old one once it loses tack, and where a permanent unattended answer is wanted a stainless spike strip is the better product. Delivery across France is free over EUR 35 and EUR 15 below it.
