Looking after it

Wipe the reflective face when it dulls, and move each disc every week or two so birds do not habituate to it.

We Say What It NeedsWind, light and moving it about. Static, it stops working

Movement and glare, hung where the wind gets it.

A visual deterrent for open ground: fruit trees, a vegetable bed, a boat, a balcony. It needs wind and light to do anything at all, and we would rather say so.

A 53 cm reflective disc that spins and flashes in the wind, hung where you want birds to stop settling.

It suits open situations a spike strip cannot help with: fruit trees, a vegetable bed, a boat, a balcony rail, a pergola.

It needs two things to work, and both are worth knowing before you buy: wind, and daylight. In a sheltered corner on a dull day it does nothing.

It also needs moving. Birds habituate to anything static, and a disc that has hung in the same spot for a month has become part of the scenery.

€5 each with no minimum, which makes it the cheapest thing on this site to experiment with.

Bird Deterrent Discs | Repellent Reflective Discs | Bird Scare Discs (per 53 cm hanging disc)

Visual deterrents divide people, and it is worth being clear about why. They genuinely work on some birds, in some situations, for a while. What they do not do is work permanently in a fixed position, because every bird species we deal with learns.

Bird Deterrent Discs | Repellent Reflective Discs | Bird Scare Discs (per 53 cm hanging disc)

So treat a disc as a short campaign rather than an installation. Hang several rather than one, move them every week or two, and expect to take them down when the crop is in and put them back next year.

Bird Deterrent Discs | Repellent Reflective Discs | Bird Scare Discs (per 53 cm hanging disc)

Where you want something permanent and unattended, a physical deterrent is the honest product: spikes on the perch, netting over the crop. Discs are what you use where neither is practical.

One practical note that saves a lot of disappointment. Hang the disc where it can turn freely and catch the light. Against a wall, inside a canopy or below the tree line, it does neither and it is doing nothing at all.

Not sure yet? That is fine.

You can change your mind. Under the EU consumer rights directive as it applies in France you have 14 days from delivery to cancel for any reason, and a further 14 days to send it back in resaleable condition. We refund the price you paid, including standard delivery.

If it turns up faulty, damaged or not as described, that is on us. The two year legal guarantee of conformity covers you across the EU, we pay the return postage, and you can have a repair, a replacement or your money back. Read the full detail on our refunds and returns page, or ask us anything before you order.

Frequently Asked Questions

How big is one disc?

About 53 cm across, and they are sold singly at €5 with no minimum.

Do they actually work?

In the right conditions, for a while. They need wind, they need daylight, and they need moving every week or two. Static in a sheltered corner they do nothing.

Why do I have to move them?

Birds habituate to anything that stays still. A disc that has hung in one spot for a month has become part of the scenery.

How often should I move them?

Every week or two, and change the height as well as the position.

How many do I need for a fruit tree?

Two or three moved about beats one left alone. At €5 each that is the cheap way to find out what your birds respond to.

Will they work on a sheltered balcony?

Probably not. No wind means no movement, and movement is most of the mechanism.

Do they work at night?

No. They need light. For a night problem you are looking at a physical barrier.

Can I hang them indoors?

There is no wind and usually not enough light, so no.

What do I hang them from?

A hook, a wire, a branch, a rail, a mast. They need to turn freely, which matters more than what they are attached to.

Do they need power?

No. Wind and daylight, nothing else.

Will they scare my own garden birds away?

They are not species selective, so yes, they will make an area less attractive to everything while they are up. That is one reason to treat them as a short campaign.

Are they better than a scarecrow?

They move, which a scarecrow does not, so they habituate more slowly. Neither is a permanent answer.

Can I use them on a boat?

That is one of the situations they suit best. Plenty of wind, plenty of light, and nothing you can fix a spike strip to.

Will they stop pigeons on a ledge?

Not reliably, and that is a spike job. Discs are for open ground.

Do they work on gulls?

Less well than on smaller birds, and a gull on a roof is a spike or a netting problem.

What about a vegetable patch?

They help during the weeks that matter. If the crop really needs protecting, netting over it is the answer.

Do they fade?

The reflective face dulls with weathering. Wipe it clean; a dull disc has stopped working.

Can I leave them up all year?

You can, and the birds will stop noticing them. Take them down between seasons and they are more effective when they go back up.

Are they noisy?

They are quiet. That is a point in their favour over anything sonic if you have neighbours.

Do they harm birds?

No. They are a visual deterrent and there is nothing to touch.

Is there anything cheaper to try first?

Not on this site. At €5 a disc this is the cheapest thing we sell.

What is the difference between these and the reflective tape?

The tape covers a line and the discs cover points. On a long row of soft fruit the tape is usually the better shape; over a single tree the discs are.

How much is delivery and how long does it take?

Delivery across France is free on orders over €35, and €15 below that. We process an order in 2 to 5 days and delivery then takes about 10 to 18 business days. A tracking number is emailed as soon as it ships.

Which payment methods do you take?

Card and PayPal. Both go through the checkout on this site and neither of us ever sees your card details.

Can I change my mind after ordering?

Yes. You have fourteen days from delivery to tell us you want to cancel, and a further fourteen days to send the goods back, under the EU consumer rights directive. Nothing we sell is made to your measurements, so the right applies to the whole range.

What if the order arrives damaged or faulty?

Tell us and we will replace it or refund it. That is separate from changing your mind: a faulty item carries a two year legal guarantee of conformity across the EU, and it is not shortened by anything on this site.

How do I track my parcel?

The tracking number is in your dispatch email, and there is a tracking page on this site. If the number has not moved for a few days, email us and we will chase it.

Do you sell to trade and in bulk?

Yes. There is a wholesale page on this site with a quote form on it. Tell us the run length or the quantity and we will price it.

Are the prices shown with tax included?

The price you see is the price you pay, in euros. Nothing is added at the checkout except delivery, and that only when the order is under the free threshold.

How do I get hold of a person?

Email theteam@birdspikes.direct. We are an online supplier with no shop counter, which is a large part of why the spikes cost what they do.

Getting a visual deterrent to actually work

4 Bird Spikes Company

What it is

A 53 cm reflective disc on a hanger. Wind turns it, daylight flashes off it, and birds that were about to settle think better of it.

The two conditions

It needs wind and it needs light. That sounds obvious and it is the reason most visual deterrents disappoint. Hung against a wall, inside a canopy, under the tree line or in a sheltered courtyard, a disc does not turn and does not flash, and it is doing precisely nothing.

Hang it where it can spin freely and where the sun reaches it for a good part of the day.

The third condition nobody mentions

Move it. Every bird we deal with habituates. A disc that has hung in the same place for a month is part of the furniture. Shift it every week or two, change the height, add a second one somewhere else, and the effect lasts far longer.

This is also why we sell them singly. Three discs moved about beat one disc left alone, and at €5 each that is a cheap experiment.

Where discs are the right answer

  • Fruit trees during the few weeks that matter
  • Vegetable beds and soft fruit
  • Boats, masts and pontoons, where nothing can be fixed
  • Balconies and pergolas, where a spike strip would be ugly and a net impractical

Where they are not

Anywhere you want a permanent, unattended answer. A ledge with pigeons on it wants spikes. A crop you need protected properly wants netting over it. Discs buy you a season with attention, not a solution you can forget.

Looking after them

Wipe the reflective face when it dulls. That is all there is to it, and a dull disc is a disc that has stopped working.

Page summary

Bird Deterrent Discs sold by Bird Spikes Company at birdspikes.direct, in France. A reflective hanging disc about 53 cm across, EUR 5 each with no minimum order, hung from a hook, wire, branch or rail. It is a VISUAL deterrent that works by movement and glare and requires both wind and daylight to do anything; in a sheltered position or an enclosed space it is ineffective. It also requires repositioning every week or two, because birds habituate to a static object. It is suited to open situations where a spike strip cannot help: fruit trees, vegetable beds, boats, balconies and pergolas. It is a short campaign rather than a permanent installation, and where an unattended permanent solution is wanted the honest products are spikes on a perch or netting over a crop. No power, no battery and no fixing required. Delivery across France is free over EUR 35 and EUR 15 below it.
