The one most people need.
A stainless steel strip on a clear base, sold by the 50 cm with no minimum. If you are not sure which of our spikes to buy, it is almost always this one.
This is the standard strip, and it is the same product sitting behind most of the species pages on this site.
Stainless steel pins on a clear polycarbonate base, sold per 50 cm with no minimum, so a two metre parapet costs four strips and nothing more.
It suits any flat surface a medium or large bird lands on: ledges, window sills, parapets, rooftops, gutter tops, fence rails and signage.
Fix it with silicone, screws, nails or cable ties, and once it is up there is nothing to maintain beyond an annual clear out.

This is the same strip we sell on the pigeon, gull, myna, squirrel, possum, sparrow, wren, gutter and fence pages. There is no different product behind those names. They exist because that is what people search for, and the advice on each one differs even though the object does not.
What the strip does is narrow. It takes away a flat surface a bird was using to stand on, and it does that permanently and without hurting anything. It is not a repellent, it does not cover an area, and a bird that cannot land on your parapet will happily land on the roof next to it.
Size is the thing to get right. The pins protect a 70 mm band, which is enough for a pigeon, a gull or a crow. A sparrow or a wren is small enough to settle between them, so if the birds you are dealing with are small, netting is the honest answer and we say so on those pages too.
Fitting is the part that decides whether it works. Clean the surface first, because old droppings and moss stop adhesive keying to anything, and a strip that lifts at one end is a perch rather than a deterrent.
Cover the whole surface, not most of it. Birds are entirely willing to use the bare half metre at the end of a run, and a gap teaches them exactly where to stand. Round the number of strips up, never down.
Once it is on, there is nothing to do but clear leaves and nesting material out from between the pins once or twice a year. Enough debris packs down into a platform, and then a bird can stand on that instead of on the spikes.

Are these the same spikes as on your pigeon and seagull pages?
Yes. Nine of our spike pages are this one physical strip under the name people search for. The advice differs, the product does not, and we would rather say so than let you buy the same thing twice.
What are the pins made of?
Stainless steel, 1.3 mm in diameter and 115 mm long, set into a clear polycarbonate base. Some of the older listing copy said the base was steel too. It is not, and the product photographs show a clear base.
How long is one strip?
500 mm, and 23 mm wide. Strips butt end to end, so a run is however many 50 cm strips it takes, rounded up.
Is there a minimum order?
No. Order one strip if that is all you need.
How wide a band do they protect?
About 70 mm, pin tip to pin tip. On anything wider than about 15 cm you want two rows.
Will they hurt the birds?
No. The pins are blunt-ended wire and they work by removing the footing, not by injuring anything. A bird that tries to land lifts off again.
Can I fit them myself?
Yes, and most people do. It is a caulking gun or a screwdriver and a tape measure.
What can I fix them to?
Masonry, render, stone, timber, steelwork, lead, PVC, powder coated metal, ceramic tile and glass. Silicone, screws, nails or cable ties depending on the surface.
Do I need to clean the surface first?
Yes, and this is the step people skip. Adhesive will not key to old droppings or moss, and a strip that lifts at one end becomes a perch.
How visible are they from the ground?
Barely. The base is 5 mm high and clear, and stainless wire is much less obvious than moulded plastic at any distance.
Will they rust?
No. They are stainless, and that includes coastal exposure.
Can I cut a strip to length?
Yes, with tin snips, between the pin mounts.
Do they work on a curved surface?
Yes. The base flexes enough to follow a gentle curve. On a tight radius, cut shorter sections and fit them in series.
Will they stop sparrows?
Honestly, no. A sparrow is small enough to sit between pins spaced for a pigeon, and on a nest site it will use them as anchor points. Netting is the right product for small birds.
Do they stop birds nesting?
They stop birds using the surface they are fitted to. They do not clear a nest that is already there, and an active nest is protected by law in France.
When is the best time to fit them?
Outside the breeding season, or after the young have fledged. Then clean the surface down before fitting.
Will the birds just move next door?
Often, yes, and that is worth planning for. Spikes take one surface out of use. If the whole roofline is in play, expect to treat the whole roofline.
Do they work in snow and ice?
They keep working, but heavy snow can bridge across the pins for a while. It clears itself as it melts.
Can I fit them on a gutter?
Yes, and we have a page about exactly that, because the reason for doing it is different: it is about blockages rather than mess below.
Are they OK on a listed or historic building?
The product is, but the fixing may not be. Cable ties and adhesive avoid drilling, and anything on a protected facade is worth checking with the relevant authority first.
What if a bird lands on top of the pins?
It cannot, on a clean strip. It can once enough leaf litter has packed down between them, which is the whole reason for the annual clear out.
How many strips for a 3 metre ledge?
Six, and seven if you would rather have a spare than a bare end.

What a spike strip actually does
A spike strip does one thing. It takes a flat surface out of use as a perch, permanently,
without harming the bird that tries to land on it. That is worth being precise about,
because a lot of bird control copy implies something closer to a force field.
The pins stand 115 mm high and protect a band about 70 mm wide. A pigeon approaching a
parapet cannot get its feet down, so it goes somewhere else. Nothing is hurt: the pins are
blunt-ended wire, not needles, and a bird that touches them simply lifts off again.
How much do you need?
Measure the run in metres and double it, because each strip is 50 cm. Round up. The single
most common reason a spike installation fails is somebody covering four metres of a five
metre ledge and leaving the birds a landing pad at one end.
Where a ledge is wider than about 15 cm you need two rows, one along the front edge and
one at the back, otherwise birds land behind the spikes on the part you did not cover.
Fixing it down
Any of four methods work, and the surface decides which:
Silicone adhesive on masonry, stone, render and tile. Use an outdoor grade, run a
bead along the whole base, and weight it down while it cures.
Screws through the base holes into timber, or into plugs in masonry.
Nails into soft timber such as a fascia.
Cable ties on railings, pipework and fence wire, where nothing can be drilled.
Clean the surface first, whichever you use. Old droppings, moss and loose paint stop
adhesive keying to anything, and a strip that lifts at one end has turned into a perch.
When not to use spikes
Be honest with yourself about the bird. Spikes at this spacing are for pigeons, gulls,
crows and similar. House sparrows and wrens are small enough to sit down between the pins,
and on a nesting site they will use the pins to anchor material. If small birds are the
problem, netting is the product, and we would rather tell you that than sell you the wrong
thing.
The other case is an active nest. In France, as across the EU, wild birds and their active
nests are protected, and taking a nest out during the breeding season is not something to
do casually. Fit spikes before the season starts or after the young have fledged.
Living with it
Once it is up, the job is done. Clear leaves and windblown nesting material out from
